Westview A Defeats CCA in Final, Wins IHOP IV

By posted February 4th, 2017

Statistics can be found here.

In the varsity division, both Canyon Crest Academy A (CCA A) and Westview A finished the eleven game round robin with a 10-1 record. In the ensuing final, Westview clinched the game on the final tossup, winning 390-345. Westview A maintains the edge over CCA A in points-per-bonus, but Canyon Crest Academy A cut down their negs to a remarkably low twenty-four. It will be interesting to see how those two attributes of each team play out in the coming months.

In the JV division, Westview swept their way to an 8-0 win, with Arcadia C taking second.

Torrey Pines A, Rancho Bernardo A, and Santa Monica A all finished tied for third. Torrey Pines continues to be led by star Thomas Freedman (11) who led all varsity players with 78.18 points-per-game (PPG). A resurgent Santa Monica A did not miss a beat despite their sporadic attendance this year, notching impressive wins over CCA A and Arcadia A. Should Santa Monica A ramp up attendance, they could figure as an X-factor in an already competitive region. Arcadia remains a difficult team to gauge; Arcadia A was not able to crack the top three despite an elite power rate and strong team balance. Matt Forster (11) starred as lead scorer for Arcadia B this tournament, powering a team-high 31 tossups. It is very possible that Arcadia‘s finish is not an accurate indicator of their strength and that they are much better than their finish.

Concerns about the depth of SoCal should be assuaged by the incredible fact that teams 1st through 9th in the varsity division all achieved PPB’s north of twenty. With such a deep assortment of teams, Southern California looks to make a splash at nationals this year.

In the JV division, the balance of Westview simply overpowered the rest of the tournament field. Notable performers include Eahmon Vahidi of St. Monica, Nick Towns of Rancho Bernardo B, and Junu Song of Westview B.
