Mesa Verde, Black Mountain A, Oak Valley A, and Black Mountain D qualified for the 2017 Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT).
SoCal continues to get stronger and stronger – with just over three months until nationals, Mesa Verde, Black Mountain A, and Oak Valley A have emerged as a clear triumvirate of powerhouses. High numbers of both powers and negs evinces Black Mountain A‘s buzz first, think later strategy, whereas Mesa Verde is a more cautious team that sacrifices an enormous power rate for cleaner games won off of points-per-bonus (PPB). There’s still a bit of work to do before we can keep pace with some of the other national circuits, but a dozen teams with more than 15.00 PPB is an optimistic sign that teams are playing with discipline, picking up every easy bonus part and dead tossup.
Wangenheim in their first tournament appearance made a splash with lead scorer Ella Dorsey (7) racking up 50.00 PPG to take an 11th-place individual finish. Andrew Cowling (7) led Christ Lutheran into the championship bracket for the first time, finishing with 4.29 PPB more than their previous finish. For both of these teams, the key to an eventual top four finish or national qualification will undoubtedly be in building a disciplined crew of support around their stars.
