Some thoughts:

  • SoCal is super stacked. Almost half of the teams attending scored more than 20 points per bonus, with a few others not far behind (Del Norte and North Hollywood). I don’t think this happens in most other regions.
  • Westview A splits two extremely close matches with Canyon Crest A, handing the latter their first loss at full strength of the season. If Westview’s youngsters can “successfully support dominant, first-class, superior science player Kevin Yu” (please contribute to that thread friends), an upset is certainly not out of the question.
  • Torrey Pines A finally shows up to a tournament, and it seems that Thomas F. is still pretty good at answering quizbowl tossups, winning the scoring, power, and neg prizes.
  • Olympian A and Olympian B both break into the championship bracket. Both teams are extremely well balanced and are very good at not negging, making them less prone to unnecessary losses.
  • San Dieguito Academy upsets Arcadia A and Westview A. The addition of Rokas V. appears to have elevated SDA to top of SoCal as he and Klaus N. split around 120 points per game between the two of them.
  • My previous prediction about Canyon Crest B (that they would be the strongest B team) might need revision – let’s see how they compare to Arcadia B and Olympian B at Bronco Bowl.
  • I think (?) that Arcadia A has finally cemented their roster, meaning that they can begin locking down their subjects and filling in knowledge gaps.
  • The tournament itself was extremely well run. Tournament Director Keerthana S. definitely deserves praise for an excellently organized event.
  • Lots of SoCalQB alumni staffing! It was nice seeing all of you (except notably bad player aseem keyal).
